CBD cosmetics: what the ingredient list says

Two different ingredients with similar names

Cosmetics carry two things from one plant: hemp seed oil (Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil), a plant oil with no cannabidiol, and cannabidiol (Cannabidiol), which is added separately. A product may contain only the first. The check is one line in the INCI list on the pack.

How to compare two creams

By cannabidiol against volume: 300 mg in 50 ml is six milligrams per millilitre. The total alone says nothing, because pack sizes differ. Where an ingredient sits in the INCI list shows its order by quantity.

Forms and where they go

Serum is the lightest and goes on first, cream on top of it, oil suits dry skin and massage, balm is the thickest and stays longest. The cannabidiol content can be identical — what differs is the base.

Frequently asked questions

Are CBD cosmetics and hemp oil cosmetics the same?

No. Hemp seed oil is a plant oil with no cannabidiol. CBD cosmetics contain added cannabidiol, listed separately in the INCI composition.

How much cannabidiol is in the cream?

The figure is on the pack, 300 mg for instance. To compare with another product, divide the milligrams by the volume.

How do I check the composition?

By the INCI list on the pack. Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil is the seed oil; Cannabidiol is cannabidiol itself. The order in the list reflects quantity.

Is there THC in cosmetics?

The content is measured in the batch report. In broad spectrum and isolate products THC is below the detection limit.

Serum or cream first?

The serum is lighter and goes first, the cream over it. Balm and oil come last or on separate areas.

Do cannabis cosmetics stain the skin?

Extracts are dark, but the finished product contains little of them. Colour and smell depend on the extract: isolate is colourless and odourless.

How is it stored?

In the dark at room temperature with the pack closed. The period after opening is marked by the open-jar symbol.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

The composition is on the pack and that is where to check. With a known sensitivity to an ingredient, the question is for a doctor, not a shop.
