CBD vs THC: What Is the Difference?

Two cannabinoids with very different effects and very different law.

CBD and THC come from the same plant and share the same chemical formula — C₂₁H₃₀O₂. The difference is in how the atoms are arranged, and it turns out to be decisive: THC has an open side chain that lets it bind tightly to the CB1 receptor in the brain. CBD does not.

Why CBD does not intoxicate

Intoxication follows from activating CB1 receptors in the central nervous system. THC activates them directly. CBD has a very weak affinity for the same receptors and does not activate them that way — which is why a product made from industrial hemp does not produce what anyone would describe as a high.

In 2018 the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence reviewed cannabidiol and concluded that in its pure form it exhibits no effects indicative of abuse or dependence potential. On that basis CBD does not fall under the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.

The legal difference

EU law does not prohibit CBD; it limits THC. Hemp may be grown from certified varieties in the Common Catalogue, and Regulation (EU) 2021/2115 raised the field THC threshold from 0.2% to 0.3% with effect from 1 January 2023. The threshold applying to the finished product is a separate question, settled at national level.

Drug testing

Tests look for THC and its metabolite THC-COOH, not for CBD. Isolate and broad spectrum by design contain no detectable THC. Full spectrum contains trace amounts — below the legal threshold, but not zero. With regular intake of large amounts of a full-spectrum product accumulation cannot be ruled out, which is why people facing a test choose broad spectrum or isolate.

Frequently asked questionsQuick answers

Can CBD convert into THC in the body?

Conversion of CBD into THC has been shown in the laboratory using strong acid, not in the human stomach. Clinical data does not support the claim that taking CBD produces meaningful amounts of THC in the body.

Which is better — with THC or without?

That is not ours to decide. Products on the EU market are below the legal THC threshold in every case; choosing between full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate is a matter of composition and personal circumstances — an upcoming test, for instance.
